Dental Sealants

Sealants are an effective method of caries prevention

For most children, cavities are a common problem that begins at an early age. Over the last few decades, several advancements have been made in caries prevention. Along with systemic and topical fluoride, the increased acceptance and use of pit and fissure sealants have without question had an impact on the prevention of caries.

“The ultimate goal of sealants is to penetrate into the pit and fissures of the tooth thus sealing it from bacteria.”

There are many grooves, pits and fissures on the chewing surfaces of permanent teeth. Brush bristles ordinarily cannot go into the depths of these surface irregularities and therefore cannot clean them properly. Dental sealants are placed on the permanent molar teeth of children shortly after they erupt.

Highly effective in preventing decay on the biting surfaces of your chewing teeth, sealants are a simple procedure in which a tooth-coloured material "coating" is painted onto the surface of the tooth to effectively "seal" the deep grooves where decay is most likely to start.

Reasons for sealants:

  • Children and teenagers – As soon as the six-year molars (the first permanent back teeth) appear or any time throughout the cavity prone years of 6-16.
  • Adults – Tooth surfaces without decay that have deep grooves or depressions.
  • Baby teeth – Occasionally done if teeth have deep grooves or depressions and child is cavity prone.

Sealants are easily applied by Dr. Arun Narang and the process takes only a couple of minutes per tooth. Proper home care, a balanced diet, and regular dental visits will aid in the life of your new sealants.
